How Much Does a Bathroom Renovation Cost?

A complete powder room or bathroom renovation is always a good real estate decision: an up-to-date bathroom will increase your home’s value, or, at the very least, attract more potential buyers.

However, revamping a bathroom is no easy feat and there are many factors to consider, including the cost. Here are a few points to keep in mind as you plan your budget.

Do You Need to Change the Plumbing?

The determining factor in if this will be a major or minor renovation project is whether or not you decide to modify the plumbing and update the fittings. Indeed, doing so usually entails considerable expense. When completely making over this room, you must remove the sink and toilet and demolish the shower, which will add to the bill unless you carry out these delicate tasks yourself.

Of course, these components will then have to be replaced. Expect this to cost between $15,000 and $30,000. A new shower can be particularly pricey (at least $4,000), especially if you decide to go for a larger size or to move it to a new location in the room (reconfiguring the pipes is no simple matter!) Keep in mind, though, that a shower or tub in perfect condition can boost your home’s value. Consider it an investment!

Do You Need to Hire Labour?

The most expensive aspect of renovating is frequently labour costs, but if you want the job done right, it is indispensable in most cases. Unless, of course, you are handy and familiar with this type of work. Nonetheless, some things will require a professional, such as anything related to electrical wiring.

If you’re modifying the plumbing, you will probably have to hire a plumber. Even if they charge you $3,000 put in all new fittings, this is far cheaper than paying for repairs due to water damage caused by your brother-in-law improperly installing the toilet! Moreover, if you aren’t experienced in laying new wall or floor tiles, you will want to hire an expert tiler. Don’t forget to include this in your budget!

High End or Cheaper Materials?

Obviously, the materials you choose will impact the final bill. Do you want a basic, mid-range or luxury bathroom? The cost of a marble vanity and natural stone sink might exceed $10,000, while a more affordable model is rarely more than $2,000. You will have to spend approximately $5,000 for a heated floor covered in carefully laid imported tiles, but readily available tiles will be far less expensive.

Don’t become discouraged. It is possible to have a “low-end” bathroom with high-end impact! A budget under $5,000 will still afford you subway tiles, a classic glass-panelled shower, water-resistant flooring and bright cheerful wall paint.

Have You Planned for Surprises?

As for any other renovation project, you should leave room for the unforeseen in your budget. Include a few extra hundred dollars in case you uncover mould behind the walls or defective plumbing, if there are delivery delays, etc. Don’t be caught unprepared. Be patient and pivot to plan B—or C—if things don’t go as expected.

Renovating a bathroom can be a rewarding project that will add value to your residence. Properly drawing up your budget is the first step. Don’t skip it!
